Grafting at the time of extraction minimizes bone loss, supports the soft tissue structures, prevents periodontal pathology, and provides adequate sites for implants in a relatively short time.  This dental webinar starts with a review of the most clinically effective, sensible and easy-to-use extraction systems. Simple and cost-effective socket grafting to more advanced clinical concepts in bone regeneration will be discussed in detail in preparation for surgical placement of dental implants.

Objectives

[excerpt] => A review of the most clinically effective, atraumatic and easy-to-use extraction systems followed by a discussion on socket grafting techniques, from simple to more advanced in preparation for surgical placement of dental implants. How many mm should the membrane be tucked beyond the defect onto healthy hard tissue to have predictable grafting results?

-- 1mm
-- At least 2mm
-- 6mm
-- 0mm

2. After extraction of a maxillary anterior tooth where is the pilot osteotomy bur positioned in the socket for an immediate implant placement?

-- In the facial aspect of the socket
-- Within the socket site itself
-- 3mm palatal to the facial aspect of the adjacent teeth

3. “Atraumatic extractions” refer to which of the following:

-- atraumatic to the patient, referring to a simple removal of teeth
-- atraumatic to the hard tissue, referring to saving the facial plate of bone
-- atraumatic to the dentist, referring to saving strength and reduction of anxiety caused by difficult extractions

4. Grafting at the time of extraction:

-- Minimizes future bone loss
-- Helps support soft tissue architecture
-- Provides adequate site for implants in 12-16 weeks
-- Results in 30-60% bone loss in 3 years

5. The allograft bone grafting material discussed:

-- Is a blend of cortical and cancellous particulates
-- Provides an osteoconductive matrix for rapid site revascularization and structural integrity
-- Is able to stabilize implants after 4-6 months
-- Is 250-1000 microns in diameter

6. Osteogen plugs are:

-- A homogenous mixture of calcium phosphate particulate and bovine Achilles tendon collagen
-- Always requires a membrane to prevent invagination of epithelium into the grafted site
-- Provides for a radiographic indicator that the material has been resorbed and replaced with host bone
-- Is the same as all the other calcium phosphate grafts available in the dental market
